Sir A. Conan Doyle's Election Hopes.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Lady Doyle were the guests of spiritualists at a luncheon given at the Holborn Restaurant yesterday, on the eve of their departure for South Africa.
Replying to the toast of his health, Sir Arthur said his enemies had never penetrated his thick skin.
He referred to spiritualism in connection with the coming general election, saying:
- Some people say why not bring pressure on each candidate. So we should, but that is not enough.
- We want just to point out that mediums are needful for our religious and for our scientific work, and that interference with our use of them, or with the development of them, is religious persecution. I pointed this out to the Home Secretary, and I had a discouraging reply.
- If the Conservatives show that they can or will do nothing for us before they dissolve, then our choice lies between the Labour and the Liberal parties. If both give us good promises then we are free to choose which we like.
