A marriage has been arranged and will take place in September between Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Miss Jean Leckie, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leckie, of Glebe House, Blackheath, and Monkstown Cottage, Crowborough.
This announcement will be received with great interest by the very large section of the public that has been fascinated by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's charm as a storyteller. It is now sixteen years since Sherlock Holmes first thrilled and delighted lovers of fiction, and made all other detectives of literature hopelessly out of date.
Sir Arthur has written many charming stories, but it is on the creation of Sherlock Holmes that his fame mainly rests; and great a favourite was he with the public that the author was induced to resurrect him three years ago. Sir Arthur, who was knighted in 1902, has political as well as literary ambitions, and has made two attempts to enter the House of Commons — as Liberal Unionist candidate for Central Edinburgh in 1900, and as a Tariff Reformer for Hawick Burghs last year.
