A very remarkable book. It shows that in 1853 — and even in 1850 (vide p 440-41) all our facts and philosophy were evident to any clear eyed observer. The Davenport part is interesting. One cannot read it without being ashamed of the British Press and public. The D's were finally driven out by the wild snobs in Liverpool. Elsewhere it was called a "trick" because unscrupulous Conjurers under their own conditions produced a sort of parody of it. A. C. D. 1921.
