My dear Smith
I am sorry Colin Maclean took my article amiss for he is an old shipmate and I have an esteem for him. I have therefore written him a letter to say so. I tell him however that when he denies the truth of it his memory fails him. I am in communication with Jack Lamb, the steward, the other actor in the affair, and I will get a consideration from him. I also kept a diary every day on the Hope. It is stored at present but I have no doubt I should find the incident noted that very day. Lamb seems quite pleased with the allusions to him.
I am very sorry Sir George should have been bothered about it. With all kind regards.
