Шерлок Холмс (Sherlock Holmes) is a Russian play written by F. Bohn, performed at Theatre of the Literary and Artistic Society (Small Theatre, Saint Petersburg, Russia) between 9 september 1906 and 1907 (around 50 performances), starring Boris Glagolin as Sherlock Holmes and I. T. Grigoriev as Dr. Watson.

There was also some performances in Hungerburg (Austria) and Narva-Joësuu (Estonia) in 1908. [1]

The play is an adaptation of the William Gillette's play : Sherlock Holmes (1899).

This is the first Russian play on stage with Sherlock Holmes. However, an adaptation of the Gillette's play was published in 1904 in Russia written by A. Bozengarda (А. Бозенгарда).

Plot Summary

Doctor Watson and Mrs. Parbs are waiting for Sherlock Holmes. Disguised as a poor man, he comes out of the fireplace. He tells Watson that he has caught a trail of murderer lord Katogan. When Lady Katogan comes to him for an advice, Holmes pleads her to leave the area for some time. When her and Watson go away, Holmes places a doll near the window and hides. The doll falls, being shot by Moriani, and when he breaks into the flat, Holmes neatly gets hold of Moriani's revolver. The latter still manages to get away since he declares that Lady Katogan is in his hands, and if Holmes doesn't get back until 10pm, she will be killed. Moriani hold a ball and Holmes sneaks into there by dressing as Professor Sighton. Moriani gives Lady Katogan a will stolen from her husband, and, blackmouthing her in front of Holmes, leaves. Holmes pleads her [Lady Katogan] to run, but she pushes him away. Sherlock manages to get the will and leaves the ball. Act three: Moriani sets a meeting with Holmes in order to exchange the Lady for the will, but actually he decided to get rid of Holmes no matter what. Holmes, solving the plan, leaves, and dressed as one of Redheaded's band, frees the lady. Act four: at Sherlock Holmes'. Holmes, Watson and the lady are ready to have breakfast. Arrive Lestrade and Gregson tell them about Moriani's escape. Holmes wants to leave with the Lady and hires himself a new agent called O'Donnell. When the latter arrives, Sherlock recognises Moriani, and, pretending to be dead after Moriani's shot, quickly arrests him and hands over to police.
