ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL. — The Portsmouth Football Club played an out and home match on Saturday, and easily winning the former they also managed to draw the latter in their favour, although at a numerical disadvantage. At Chichester, where the ground was somewhat heavy owing to the recent rain, the visitors won the toss, and the home eleven Kicked off. The ball was, however, at once taken into the territory of the Chichester players, and after several unsuccessful shots had been made, Dawson, by a sharp run and a good kick, registered a goal for Portsmouth. This put the Chichester men on their mettle, and, playing up with spirit, they succeeded in equalising matters, an excellent run in the left wing by Austin, who centred to Harris, resulting in the latter obtaining a goal. In the second half of the game the Portsmouth team, who worked well together, had all the best of the play, the home eleven being forced to act strictly on the defensive. The visitors, however, were not to be denied, and, thanks to the smart dribbling of their forwards and the safe kicking of their backs, they rapidly scored three additional goals, which were respectively placed to the credit of Lieutenant T. M. Nelson, R. M. L. I., Pearman, and Brookes. Portsmouth thus won by four goals to one. Sides:— Portsmouth: Centre forward, A. H. Godfrey ; right wing, H. Brooks and T. Huddy ; left wing, T. M. Nelson and C. T. Pearman ; half-backs, W. O. Adames (captain), J. Poole, and Dawson ; full backs, A. C. Smith and Murphy ; goal, A. Moore. Chichester: Forwards, Knowles (captain), Cowley, Easum, Harris, and Robinson ; half-backs, Dr. G. H. Weston, Hardham, and Smith ; backs, White and Downer ; goal, Austin. — The second team of the Portsmouth Football Club met the Southsea Wanderers at North End, and, though two men short, had the play in their own hands throughout the game. Repeated shots were made at the Wanderers' goal, but the only successful one was disallowed on an appeal for "hands." R. E. Davies, E. Totterdell, and J. McDonald, amongst the forwards and P. Russell and E. Pink, at full back, rendered special service for Portsmouth, while Bone Craddock, and Batchelor were most conspicuous amongst the Wanderers.
