Corinthians v. United Services

Heavy scoring. — The opening of this two days' match yesterday, at the U.S.C.C. Ground, Portsmouth, yielded the third heaviest score ever made on the ground — the Corinthians totalling 602, and occupying the wickets until close upon six o'clock. They commenced batting at a quarter past twelve o'clock with Hewett and Barton, and although they were together but a short time the "telegraph" showed 81 when the former was caught, his 53 being compiled by two 6's, eight 4's, two 2's, and singles. The 1 3/4 hours' play before luncheon yielded 244; the second wicket fell for 85, the third for 94, the fourth for 191, the fifth for 253, the sixth for 321, the seventh for 559, the eighth for 568, the ninth for 591, and the tenth for 602. The bowling analysis showed only five maidens. Major Bethune's hits included one 6 and eighteen 4's; Mr. Bonham-Carter's, one 6 and seventeen 4's; and Mr. Henery's one 6, twenty-two 4's, and five 3's. Score as follows:—
