The Boy Scouts of Crowborough, Sussex, had a real adventure when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes, set them the task of finding some gold which he had hidden in the gorse-clad common in the district. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle gave the boys the various clues they had to follow. The chase went on from trail to trail. the Scouts revelling in the adventure, until the final slip of paper was found "beneath an ancient fossil tree many many thousands of years old."
It contained the secret, the directions being that the rubber do which was tuned among the furze was to be cut open. This Sir Arthur did, and handed the golden sovereigns which were found inside to the scoutmaster. Scout Barham, who is ten years old, showed keen powers of observation and was congratulated by Sir Arthur. He discovered the sign by the waterfall and traced the paper trail to the fifth sign.
