In the Sherlock Holmes stories
Major John Sholto was the father of Bartholomew Sholto and Thaddeus Sholto (SIGN, 545).
- He retired some eleven years ago (i.e. 1877), and came to live at Pondicherry Lodge, in Upper Norwood (SIGN, 546). He had prospered in India, and brought back with him a considerable sum of money, a large collection of valuable curiosities, and a staff of native servants (547). With these advantages he bought himself a house, and lived in great luxury (548).
- He was involved in the theft of the Agra treasure, and the betrayal of captain Arthur Morstan and Jonathan Small (SIGN).
- In the case of the Sholto murder, Inspector Jones said that Sherlock Holmes was closer of the truth than the police. (REDH, 389)
