Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the defeated Tory candidate in the Border Burghs, had a rather lively time. At Hawick he complained that he could not get a suitable place to speak in, because the Liberals had secured the only two halls in the town. "That's Protection," shouted somebody, amid cheers.
