Professeur Bell

Professeur Bell (Professor Bell) is a French series of comics, written by Hervé Tanquerelle and illustrated by Joann Sfar, published by Delcourt from 1st january 2004 to 14 june 2006.

Professor Bell was a real person. He was Arthur Conan Doyle's professor of medicine at Edinburgh University (1876-1878). However, the character in this comics has nothing related to reality nor with Arthur Conan Doyle.

  • Professeur Bell No. 1: Le Mexicain à deux têtes (1 january 2004)

    The Mexican with Two Heads: Professor Bell practices his skills as a teratologist (a specialist in monsters) in Edinburgh. When the sinister Pinon comes to ask him to remove the second small head that's growing on his forehead, Bell has no idea that he's getting himself into a mess by refusing to operate. Pinon, who also happens to be the director of an insane asylum, declares that he'll do anything to change his mind...

  • Professeur Bell No. 2: Les Poupées de Jérusalem (1 january 2004)

    The Puppets of Jerusalem: Professor Bell, a friend of monsters and ghosts, has only a few days to drive the devil out of Jerusalem. With a camera slung over his shoulder, the demon wanders the streets of the Holy City accompanied by a beautiful young woman who will not leave the professor unmoved.

  • Professeur Bell No. 3: Le Cargo du roi singe (1 january 2004)

    The Cargo of the Monkey King: Joseph Bell is brooding. He's bored, he misses his wife, and Eliphas's efforts to pull him out of his apathy are in vain. Only a visit from his friend Ossour Hyrsidoux manages to amuse him. Ossour wanted to give him a superb giant macaque (5 meters tall!), which disappeared as soon as it arrived at the port. Bell immediately suspects the crime kingpin, Adam Worth, of having stolen it. But he doesn't yet know that the latter wants to organize a giant ape hunt in the Highlands!

  • Professeur Bell No. 5: L'Irlande à bicyclette (14 june 2006)

    Ireland with a Bicycle: Professor Bell has inadvertently killed the only daughter of his worst enemy, Adam Worth, while he wanted to kill him instead. Overcome by remorse, Bell gradually becomes insomniac and loses touch with reality. He decides to go to Ireland to rest with his companions... only to quickly discover strange lost souls lurking nearby. The rest will be short-lived!
