The Allahakbarries

The Bystander (20 january 1926, p. 120)

The Artists' C.C., when not engaged at Morgan Hall, would play their brother Bohemians of allied professions. I recall a match against E. W. Hornung's XI at Esher when, as usual, Arnesby Brown made 64 and Abbey, as usual, made 0 (not out). For the opposition, five authors, still with us and still writing, failed to reach double figures: they were A. Conan Doyle, J. C. Snaith, A. E. W. Mason, Frankfort Moore and J. M. Barrie. On another occasion the artists met, and were defeated by Sir James Barrie's XI, known as the Allahakbarries, for whom the creator of Sherlock Holmes scored 91 and took eight wickets.
